There is Health in Wellness

Let’s talk about wellness. It may seem odd for an insurance professional to talk about wellness, but if you give some consideration it makes perfect sense. My main job is to keep your insurance dollars down to a minimum while providing you with your best options for your situation.

Wellness will be a big issue in the State of Alabama in 2010. According to NAHU (National Association of Health Underwriters), Alabama state employees will face financial ramifications for obesity and poor health practices. With benefits for most state employees are low in premium dollar cost, this new mandate will require all employees to “get with the program” and get healthy or see an increase in their insurance costs.

Wellness is also an issue that the new US Administration will be encouraging as they try to figure out the health care for the U.S. With wellness programs in place, the U.S. Government sees a substantial savings as more people stay well and less need medical care.

Wellness is nothing new. We learned it in school through P.E. and our general nutrition classes. We all just tend to migrate toward ease and relaxing and spend less time “Sweatin’ To the Oldies”. The older we get, the slower we seems to want to move. The next time you are out, look for a few things: (1) How many tobacco users do you see? (2) How many people do you see who could be borderline overweight or even obese? (3) What did the people sitting around you get to eat? Things like this, should you choose to notice them will shock you. Then ask yourself why the state of Alabama currently ranks 2nd in the nation for obesity.

A wellness program in your place of employment could be the jump-start you and your people need to be more productive, lead healthier lives, and finally take control of their potential longevity.

Considerations to Make in Choosing a Chiropractor

Truth is, looking for a chiropractor can be somehow difficult given that a general of them are involved in some kind of unscientific practices. So in order to save your time and effort, start the process of looking for one through phone calls. Talk to the chiropractor and explore his or her attitude.

As much as possible, do not go with chiropractor whose practice is merely limited into the conservative method of the treatment. Also, you can seek the help of your personal medical doctor. Ask about names of reputed chiropractors who your personal doctor thinks to be trustworthy.

Membership to the renowned National Association for Chiropractic Medicine is a positive sign to look for. But given that the number of people who belong to this kind of organization is very small, it may be hard for you to look for them.

Go for science-based chiropractors since they can do the job of manually stretching the tight muscles and joints while at the same time using ultrasound treatment, heat or ice packs, and various other modalities that are employed by physical therapists. Also, they may ask their patience to perform home exercise program. With all of these, an improvement is expected to be seen only after a few days from the first treatment with science-based chiropractors.

These are some of the positive signs that will tell you if the chiropractor who you are asking for help is indeed reliable. You need to do your own homework to be able to rule out the best from the least.

Regenerative Medicine and the Thymus Gland

In the field of modern medicine, debilitating musculoskeletal injuries are becoming less of a threat to long-term vitality thanks to advancements in knowledge of the body’s own intrinsic recuperative mechanisms. Now, increasing awareness about the body’s own healing processes has revealed a vital but still poorly understood regenerative mechanism initiated by the thymus gland. While still undergoing extensive study, clinical research has revealed its function in physiological protection and regeneration. Proteins produced by the thymus gland play key roles in rehabilitation and recuperation from all types of musculoskeletal injury.

Thymus proteins are produced naturally by the thymus gland early in life, with most production ceasing before the onset of puberty. Also referred to as Tβ4, they exhibit a myriad of cellular functions that assist the repair and recovery of wounded tissue. These include the enhancement of new blood vessel formation (angiogenesis), cell migration, stem cell differentiation, and gene expression. When the body suffers a physical injury (for example, a torn quadriceps), these proteins are found in greater concentrations near the wounded area, where they facilitate healing through the aforementioned mechanisms. Clinical studies have shown them to consistently facilitate the healing and recovery of damaged bodily tissue.

For instance, a 1999 study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology found that the thymus gland accelerates wound healing through the process of angiogenesis. Researchers observed that treated subjects’ wounds contracted by a minimum of 11% more than control subjects’ wounds by the one week mark. Though the study was conducted on rats, the researchers concluded that the thymus gland was a wound healing factor with multiple activities.

Further, a 2014 study in the Journal of Orthopaedic Research showed that the thymus gland was able to enhance bone fracture healing in mice test subjects. The study found that treated mice had a 41% increase in peak force to failure and had up to 26% more new mineralized tissue than the control group. Importantly, researchers noted that the findings of their study indicated that thymus proteins played a key role in the healing of bone fractures.

Moreover, additional studies have demonstrated that thymus proteins have potent anti-inflammatory effects as well. A 1999 study published in Nature Medicine sought to explore the action mechanisms of Tβ4 as anti-inflammatory agents. After the study’s conclusion, researchers noted that the thymus may have far-reaching effects on the body’s inflammatory processes.

Certainly, research on the thymus gland’s healing mechanisms may have a beneficial impact on our knowledge of the body’s regenerative processes. Again, though still in the early phases, clinical study to this point has shown the thymus gland to be a key part of the body’s natural recuperative mechanisms. Currently, several research centers are invested in further clinical study to yield greater knowledge of the thymus gland.

Natural Remedies Best for Head Lice Treatment

Natural Remedies Best for Head Lice Treatment

After treating an outbreak among elementary school-age children, public health doctors in Wales discovered that 80% of head lice were resistant to the insecticidal shampoos commonly used to eliminate them.

Despite the wide availability of treatments, head lice infestations are on the rise. Why? After years of using the same products to eradicate lice, they are becoming immune to our treatments. Insects either evolve methods of neutralizing the insecticide before it destroys them or simply become less sensitive to the toxins in the insecticide.

At the National Public Health Service for Wales Communicable Disease Surveillance Center, Dr. Daniel Thomas discovered that four out of five lice were resistant to pyrethroids (the chemicals commonly used in head lice treatments) due to the development of a specific gene.

This and other studies indicate that natural remedies to the problem might be the best solution. Specially designed combs trap and kill lice and nits, and mixtures composed primarily of coconut or olive oil have proven extremely effective in head lice treatment. Not surprisingly, natural treatments are also much safer for the patient. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) continually maintains that no pesticide can legally be sold as a “safe” product, and as such, chemical shampoos for head lice treatment cannot be assumed completely nontoxic.

The active ingredients in head lice treatment shampoos are pediculicides: nerve poisons which are neurotoxic to children as well as lice. Lindane is the most dangerous of the pediculicides, and it can be absorbed through your skin. Some of the tamer side effects include headaches and vertigo, but lindane also has the potential to cause nerve damage, convulsions, disrupt hormonal function, and damage the liver, kidneys, and immune system.

Guaranteed safety and guaranteed louse immunity make an all-natural treatment like olive, coconut, or neem oil the preferred choice for many who suffer and are seeking head lice treatment. In addition to being less expensive and more readily available, you can rest assured these natural treatments will always work and that those who suffer won’t run the risk of developing any dangerous side-effects.

How to Get Rid of Your Health Problems?

Maintaining a good health needs a highly relaxed mind. Stress can put your normal life into a complex and dangerous situation which can transform into fatigue and compounds in developing problems that can ruin your life to a great extent. This can put your life into great trouble.

One of the reasons, where an individual can undergo stress is the escalating healthcare costs that are no more accessible to an average individual. This increase in costs makes proper healthcare inaccessible to most of the people which would develop into a major concern in the near future. This rise in costs is because of many cost drivers such as prescription, expenses of modern technologies, treatments and skyrocketing hospital charges.

In order to effectively control costs, quality healthcare must be provided to all the people by the government at an affordable price but due to many sociopolitical reasons this hasn’t been implemented. Many organizations and individuals also have put in a lot of effort to reduce the costs but to their utter dismay this wasn’t possible for them. Some organizations were able to survive against all the odds in providing affordable healthcare to the public. These organizations, with an objective and vision to provide affordable healthcare access to the citizens of America, have started offering huge discounts on the medical care expenses. This includes providing dental, vision, prescription drugs, and chiropractic care for the well-being of the people. By giving provide huge discounts on the medical bills, companies have restructured the whole healthcare industry to a great extent. Such a situation created has provided ultimate solution in critical situations.

The Tips for Flu Prevention

The Tips for Flu Prevention

1. Get vaccinated.
The best way to prevent oneself from contracting the flu is to get a shot. It will not give the person the flu. It will likely keep the person from getting it. If they do; however, it will be a more mild case than if they had not gotten vaccinated.

2. Wash hands frequently.
For those who come in contact with surfaces in public places, particularly those with high traffic, frequent hand washing will help reduce the risks of contracting the illness. Use warm, soapy water and wash hands vigorously for a minimum of 20 seconds. Rinse well and use a clean towel or air dryer to dry them thoroughly. Use the towel to turn off the faucet, when possible.

3. Do not touch the face.
People should refrain from touching their faces with their hands, especially after coming in contact with a frequently used surface.

4. Be a preventive employer.
Employers should encourage their workers to get a flu shot. Contacting medical staffing agencies to set up in-house flu vaccinations will lower the risk of employees contracting the flu and will prevent them from having to leave the premises to get the shot.

5. Stay home sick.
Employees with the flu should stay home when they are sick, rather than come to the office and cause customers and other employees to contract the virus.

6. Avoid close personal contact.
Keep a safe distance from people who are ill with the flu. Those who are sick should make a conscious effort to stay away from others when they believe they have the virus.

7. Know the risks.
Take the flu virus seriously. More than 36,000 people die from influenza each year. About 14,000 are hospitalized with complications from the illness.

8. Know the symptoms.
There are many different signs and symptoms of the flu. When a few are present, consult a medical health care or home elder care provider for an examination. Watch for sudden, severe onset of headache and/or extreme exhaustion. A fever between 102 and 104 degrees F can last from 3 to 4 days. Other possible symptoms may include coughing, sneezing, sore throat, runny nose and muscle aches.

An Appreciation of Henry Lindlair, Early 20th Century Naturopath

In my search for answers to use alternative medicine in place of modern drugs and pharmacy I ran across the story of colorful naturopath Henry Lindlair (1862-1924). As a young man Lindlair accumulated a fortune. Although rich he was sick at 35. Diagnosed with diabetes and given just a few months to live he changed his lifestyle to nature cure. Ten years later he owned a successful drug free nature cure clinic in Chicago. Over the next 20 years became the leading scientific naturopath in America.

Lindlair’s story is common in the annals of nature cure. His cure was not found in drugs, but located in nature. His first touch was reading Louis Kuhne’s The New Science of Healing which introduced him to the concept that disease is caused by violating nature’s laws. After applying the Kuhns suggestion he eventually became cured of diabetes. The experience gave him the drive to embark on a lifelong journey into natural cures.

Before that Lindlair had believed that life, death, and disease were largely a matter of being in the wrong place and disease was caught by chance. He felt betrayed by a medical community that should have explained that as simple a thing as diet and that he was cured by what medical doctors called a “Quack.”

Lindlair believed that if he became a medical doctor he could correct the wrong thinking conveyed by the medical profession. He learned osteopathy and nutrition, then later received his medical license and started his Chicago practice. He consistently railed against the rich American diet and felt good blood did not need large quantities of fats, proteins, meats, and dairy products. He felt that vegetable salts were taxed with heavy foods that nutritional deficiencies would occur. He never became a fanatic about food but was careful about quantity, making vegetables the biggest portions on his plate.

Four core solutions were used in his sanatorium
o Rest and Relaxation
o Water, air, light, electricity
o Hydrotherapy of all sorts, cold, warm, hot
o Controlled diet

Besides those he used homeopathy and occasional herbs. Lindlair was an accomplished naturopath whose light went out too early when he paid no attention to himself. An infection in his toe led to blood poisoning killed him.
